An equal partnership

We always talk about ‘a deep latch’, as much breast in baby’s mouth as possible, not just sucking on the nipple…
Why?
When the baby takes a big mouthful of breast, your nipple doesn’t rub towards the hard part of baby’s palate, they can get more milk, your nipple stays well and you don’t experience pain. That’s the goal!
How?
One of the tips to get a deep latch is to lift baby’s chin a bit, so baby’s head is tilted backwards. If a baby has their chin pulled into their chest, their lower jaw is only moveable a little but so it can’t open very wide. If you are not sure- it sometimes helps to make a picture, so you can have a better look at your baby’s position.
Try it yourself: Place your chin on your chest and try to open wide – take a bite out of an apple! And compare it with a bite into an apple with your chin lifted up. 🍏 🤣
